4th of July weekend 30 years ago was the last time I saw my brother alive, he ended his life by suicide 15 days later. We were enjoying a family camping trip to celebrate my Dad's birthday as well as Bobby getting help for his struggle with gambling. We had no idea at that time that he was addicted, we just knew that he was doing it more that he should have and it was changing who he was. It was taking time away from his family that loved him so much and wanted him to be happy and healthy again. I will never forget the fun we had that weekend, the time talking around campfire, hiking - Bobby carrying my daughter on his shoulders, playing baseball and fishing. As much as I remember the good things, I also look back at pictures and see the emptiness in his eyes. I can't help but wonder what he was thinking, did he know what his plan was at that time? Did he see it as a good bye even though we saw it as hope? How painful was it for him to be away from the gambling that brought him down? Was he able to feel the love we had for him, the excitement at him getting help to bring him back to us? What would I do differently if I could have a do over? We always loved celebrating our Dad on the 4th of July, from the time we were little, it was always a special day.
I see things differently now, I have a deep love for those that are close to me. Not that I didn't love deeply before, but losing Bobby reminds me that it can all be gone in an instant. ![]()
For 30 years I have tried to keep his memory alive by working our non profit, reminding people that they matter and that gambling can become an addiction and it is okay to talk about both of them.
This year I am working with a dear friend to put a calendar together of some of Bobby's favorite outside places in Oregon. I need help to make this happen, I am asking for donations to help me with the process, then they will be for sale as well. If you are able to help, please go to my website, OGAO.org and hit the donate button.
